Alleviating Suffering

Posted on July 7, 2009 by Leonard

When we see real and unavoidable suffering all around us on television and even within our own communities and families we may experience helplessness or guilt. We know that these two responses do not serve others yet we don t know what else to do sometimes. It may seem particularly indulgent and selfish to focus on ourselves when others are struggling with basic survival. How can we let ourselves get wrapped up in figuring out whether we should go back to school, start a new career, or even what to do about a problematic relationship while others are worried about having enough food or shelter or medicine. The answer I offer is that it is an illusion to think in such either or terms. The truth is that we don t have to and shouldn t choose between helping others and helping ourselves simultaneously. Because the more we do to alleviate our own unnecessary suffering, the more we are available to help serve others whose suffering is unavoidable. We naturally feel compassion for those who suffer from pain, illness, poverty, natural disasters, or political...

Lobster Was Not Always The King Of Seafood

Posted on May 17, 2009 by Alexia

The succulent shellfish started out branded as a scavenger, bottom feeder and food for the impoverished. However, thanks to the progress of modern transportation, lobster could be shipped from Canada to the upper northern states to become the luxury food we now appreciate. These days the finest restaurants take pride in their lobster recipes and Surf and Turf presentations. Besides being a versatile and delicious meal, shellfish such as lobster, shrimp and oysters, have a good taste for health. Recent studies have dismissed the connection between higher blood cholesterol and the consumption of shellfish. Milligram for milligram, lobster is only slightly higher with 81 milligrams per 3 ounce serving compared to lean ground beef and chicken at 78 milligrams per 3 ounces. Lobster and shrimp are low in fat and coupled with moderate portions it can be enjoyed up to three times a week. Remember that it s the sauces and butters that increase fat and cholesterol. Try different methods of cooking, such as steaming or in salads and soups or even on the grill. It is...

What Causes Add?

Posted on April 10, 2009 by Vito

Many of the parents, as well as the children affected by Attention Deficit Disorder ADD , have been left wondering what causes this frustrating and complicated disorder. Unfortunately, there is not a simple answer to this question. There has been much debate over the last few years as to the causes of ADD; some have argued parental shortcomings, food allergies, or neurological defects to be the cause. When it really comes down to it, no one knows for sure what causes ADD. However, through intense and thorough research, scientists have been able to determine what does not cause the disorder, as well as certain factors that seem to contribute to it. It should first be understood that good parenting, or lack thereof, does not cause or prevent ADD. Although many parents will feel guilty about what they may have done to lead to the disorder, these feelings are scientifically unfounded. Likewise, sugar, certain foods, and allergies have also not been shown to contribute to Attention Deficit Disorder. It has been stringently disputed in the past that nutrition not...

For A Long Life - Keep Your Life Simple!

Posted on December 23, 2008 by Cristobal

It may be too unsophisticated, but keeping your life simple is an important key to longevity. Aside from prolonging life, it makes a long life happy. What is the purpose of a long life, if you spend most of it in illnesses. A short life is better than a long life of being bedridden, medicine sustained, and pierced by dozens of intravenous tubes. In all the perplexities that are going on around, many people have forgotten how simple simple really is. They have forgotten that one key to a healthy life is being downright simple. Simplicity is often times so profound to other people that they do not believe it unless someone complicates it for them. They find it hard to imagine that once upon a time, people lived comfortably and very happy that satisfaction exists even without TV, air conditioners, or phones. They lived much longer and healthier lives long before the discovery of Science and Medicine. They don t need some social science expert to tell them that needs are proportional to progress, and that needs cannot stay as they are while progress goes on...
